Your whole-life smile is important to our dental team. That is why we encourage you to take superb care of your teeth and gums! Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to maintain a healthy, natural smile for your whole life. Here are some ways to take care of your teeth and gums as you get older.

Brush: Clean your teeth and gums thoroughly, every day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth and gum tissues for two minutes (think “massage” rather than “scrub”).

Floss: Floss your teeth once daily for two to three minutes. If flossing has become difficult for you, don’t give up! Talk with your dentist about flossing alternatives, such as pre-strung flossers or a water flosser.

Eat Well: Limit your sugary, starchy, and acidic foods. It’s also best to eat more whole fruits and vegetables. The fiber in the fruit helps balance out the natural sugars they contain. Low-sugar dairy products, like cheese and plain yogurt, are also beneficial. If you need to limit dairy, try other calcium-rich foods such as beans, dark leafy greens, or fortified cereal products.

Time To Quit: You’ve heard it before, but you’ll hear it again here: it’s time to stop using tobacco products. Not only is tobacco damaging to your overall health, it also promotes tooth decay and gum disease. The best thing you can do for your smile–and yourself–is to quit smoking and using tobacco.
