Teeth Extractions

Teeth Extractions

Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary when a tooth cannot be saved due to severe decay, infection, or trauma. Our dental staff is highly skilled and experienced in performing extractions safely and effectively.

When Is an Extraction Necessary?

Sometimes, a tooth can become so damaged that it can’t be repaired with a filling or other dental treatment. In these cases, the tooth needs to be removed. The most common reason to have a tooth extracted is decay or infection. However, impacted wisdom teeth and crowding can also be reasons for needing an extraction.

Our dentist in Anaheim will examine your tooth to determine if removal is the best option for you. If it isn’t, we will recommend other procedures that can help restore your smile.

Toothache

If you visit the dentist for a toothache, you may be advised to undergo an extraction. This is the removal of a tooth that’s become damaged or decayed beyond repair.

Before your procedure, the area will be numbed so you don’t feel any pain. Then, the tooth can be removed with forceps and dental elevators.

If you also need a dental implant, the implant post can be placed into the empty tooth socket at the same time as the extraction. In other cases, you can return it to see our dentist and have the implant placed at a later time. Either way, you’ll receive instructions on how to take care of the extraction site so you avoid infection.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

The dentist may recommend you have your wisdom teeth extracted to protect your other teeth and your overall oral health. The length of time between when a tooth erupts (comes into the mouth) and when it’s removed can vary from person to person. Many dentists recommend removing wisdom teeth before they erupt to avoid future problems. However, some patients can have their wisdom teeth extracted after they’ve erupted without experiencing any problems.

Our dentist will be able to examine your teeth and determine the best course of treatment for you.

Orthodontic Treatment

Teeth extraction is sometimes part of the orthodontic treatment process, especially if teeth are crowded, impacted, or do not line up correctly. This may also be the case if there is a need to remove teeth that are not able to be corrected with braces or other orthodontic appliances, such as permanent teeth that erupt behind the baby teeth and block other teeth from coming in.

Teeth extractions are sometimes done at an earlier age for children as they begin to develop their adult dentition, but adults can also undergo tooth extraction as part of their orthodontic treatment plan. In these cases, the teeth that are extracted may not be replaced with dental implants or another form of restorative dentistry.
